Thomas Chisholm recalled a phrase from Lamentations 3:22-23 as he wrote the refrain of this well-loved hymn in 1923. “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning, great is Thy faithfulness.” Chisholm’s friend and organist, William Runion soon afterward composed a melody that has been sung joyously for nearly a century!
